6d Science Board

Our advisory board of independent scientists meets regularly to ensure that our sports nutrition continues to be based on recent, peer-reviewed scientific research and innovations.

Prof. Dr. Wim Derave

Wim Derave is a professor in the Department of Movement and Sports Sciences at Ghent University, a globally leading institution in the field of sports science. He leads an active research team focused on exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and muscle metabolism, and teaches in these areas at the university.

He earned his PhD through research on the effects of physical activity on muscle insulin sensitivity and glycogen metabolism, in collaboration with the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre. During his postdoctoral work at KU Leuven, his focus shifted to the creatine system in skeletal muscles. In Ghent, he established a research lab centered around topics such as beta-alanine and carnosine, and developed an MRI-based method to map muscle fiber types. In 2017, he spent six months as a visiting professor in Australia.

Wim has published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. He is actively involved in science communication and has contributed to several international consensus statements on sports nutrition across various disciplines.

Prof. Dr. Javier Gonzalez

Javier Gonzalez is a professor at the University of Bath (United Kingdom), where he conducts research on how the human body utilizes fuel. His work focuses on how we process nutrients, burn energy during exercise, and store excess fuel. He is driven by a passion for health and performance.

His research group employs a range of techniques—such as calorimetry, biopsies, and stable isotope infusions—to analyze human fuel metabolism. They combine controlled laboratory studies with real-world, practical research settings.

In 2018, Javier received the Julie Wallace Award from the Nutrition Society. He is also active on editorial boards of scientific journals, including The Journal of Physiology and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism.

Dr. Jorn Trommelen

Jorn Trommelen is an Assistant Professor at Maastricht University in the Department of Human Biology. He specializes in the interaction between nutrition and exercise in relation to muscle growth and recovery, both in research and in teaching.

His studies focus on optimizing nutritional strategies—such as protein, carbohydrate, and supplement intake—to enhance sports performance. A central line of research investigates how much protein is needed for optimal recovery and which factors influence these needs across different populations and training situations.

Jorn combines fundamental research with practical applications and contributes to translating scientific insights into guidelines for athletes and coaches.
