Research has shown that a dose of 20 - 40 g of protein per intake is needed to maximize muscle growth and recovery. The exact protein dose depends on the leucine content of the protein source. This is due to the fact that leucine has a much greater effect on the synthesis of muscle protein than any other amino acid. By adding “extra” leucine to a suboptimal but high-quality protein dose (e.g. <20g), muscle protein synthesis can be stimulated just as well as after taking 25g of high-quality protein. The total protein dose, however, must provide at least 3 grams of leucine in order to optimally stimulate muscle growth and repair. That is why the 6d PROTEIN BAR consists of a protein blend of whey protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, and milk protein isolate. These are all high-quality protein sources with a high leucine content. The choice for this premium protein blend, and the addition of extra L-leucine, results in a unique protein bar with 19g of high-quality protein, including 3 grams of L-leucine.

Thanks to its high-quality protein blend, and the carbohydrates that are also present (~ 22g), the 6d PROTEIN BAR is extremely suitable for athletes who prefer a quick and tasty “snack” instead of a shake after an intensive exercise effort. The 6d PROTEIN BAR will also stimulate protein synthesis more effectively than almost any other protein bar. Although most protein bars do contain more protein (e.g. 20-25g), these proteins are often derived from an inferior protein blend with a large fraction of wheat protein and/or collagen, which contain hardly any leucine!

Moreover, protein intake is not only important immediately after exercise. The positive effects of protein on muscle growth and recovery are further enhanced by taking at least 20 grams of protein every 3 to 4 hours during the day. With the 3 main meals, this protein dose can easily be obtained from protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products or plant-based meat substitutes. A high dose of casein protein (e.g. 40g) is the most suitable protein source to take before bed because of its sustained release profile (see 6d NIGHT PROTEIN). In this context, the 6d PROTEIN BAR can also be used as a protein-rich snack in the afternoon. If no protein is ingested in the afternoon, a period of 5-7 hours between lunch and dinner would occur, which is not optimal. However, do know that the 6d PROTEIN BAR also contains a total of 237 kcal due to its size (60g/bar). Athletes who strive for weight loss, or who are sensitive to weight gain, should therefore choose the 6d WHEY PROTEIN (± 130 kcal) or 6d VEGAN PROTEIN (± 145 kcal) as the basis for their protein-rich afternoon snack.

Suggested use

1 bar per day, after exercise or as a protein-rich snack.

The 6d PROTEIN BAR can serve perfectly as an additional protein source, depending on the protein requirement, even if the 6d RECOVERY SHAKE, WHEY PROTEIN, and/or 6d NIGHT PROTEIN are already being used that day.
